Coborn's began in 1921 when Chester Coborn opened a produce market in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Over the years, Chester and his son Duke grew the market by adding various food lines, dry goods and groceries. Chester's two sons, Chester Jr. and Duke, took over the business after their father's death in 1929. They led the company as it evolved with the addition of meat products in 1936; the acquisition of shopping carts and checkouts in the 1940's and the move to cash and carry in the 1950's.

In 1957, Duke's four sons, Dan, Bob, Bill and Ron, took over the business following the death of their father. They constructed new stores in other parts of central Minnesota. Over time, they established a trusted, well-recognized retail identity by installing the latest innovations and amenities; all in an effort to meet the growing needs of customer. Today, Bob, Bill and Ron have passed on but Dan remains active in the business, serving as Chairman of the Board. The Coborn family continues to maintain ownership of the company and fourth generation family members, Chris (Dan's son) and Mark (Bill's son), now serve in leadership roles.
